Located right along the Rio Grande and the U.S.- Mexico Border, El Paso (“The Pass” in Spanish), El Paso is a major trade and economic center. It’s also a hub of federal and military activity — Fort Bliss, Biggs Army Airfield, the El Paso Intelligence Center, and Joint Task Force North are all located here. El Paso has been ranked the safest city in the U.S. for four consecutive years.
El Paso is a mecca of arts, culture and music festivals, locals take advantage of the beautiful desert surroundings to create truly special events. The Fiesta De Las Flores, or the festival of flowers, celebrates the Hispanic culture of the region — the highlight is the parade! The Neon Desert Music Festival lights up downtown El Paso during the last weekend of May — you can see over 30 indie, latin, and electronic acts at this festival. You can combine your love of electronica and the great outdoors at the Sun City Music Festival, which is held in Ascarate Park — it’s the largest dance festival in Texas! Ink lovers will need to check out the Texas Showdown Festival — which celebrates both musicians and tattoo artists. For something more classical, you can see the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, which is the longest running orchestra in Texas.
El Paso has a robust and diverse economy — the metro area had a GDP of $29 billion, additionally, nearly 100 billion in trade passes through the city every year. More than 70 Fortune 500 companies have offices in El Paso, including AT&T, ADP, Boeing, Charles Schwab, Delphi, Dish Network, Eureka, Hoover, Raytheon, Prudential Financial, USAA and Verizon Wireless. The largest employers in El Paso are Fort Bliss, El Paso Independent School District, the City of El Paso and the University of Texas at El Paso. The Union Plaza and Northeast neighborhoods are the most popular with young professionals searching for apartments for rent.
The summers get hot in the El Paso desert, but winters are dry and mild, and there are 302 days of sunshine every year. When looking for an apartment for rent, it’s a good idea to find one with an air conditioner and utilities included.
El Paso is famous for its Tex-Mex and Creole cuisine. Newcomers should definitely try the Casita Linda, steaming plates of refried beans and mind blowing enchiladas can be had here. For New Orleans style Creole dining, Jambalaya is the place to go — try the turtle soup! If you’re really, really hungry, try Cattleman’s Steakhouse, you can get giant helpings of ribs and steak here. In addition to Tex-Mex and Creole, you can find pretty much any kind of ethnic cuisine you could want in El Paso.
El Paso is considered one of the top three safest U.S. metropolitan areas. The city has a strong military presence with various military bases at Fort Bliss and Biggs Army Airfield. The city rapid growth is caused by migration from the impoverished rural Texas areas. Another engine of population growth is a Hispanic community, which massively immigrated to the city and has high fertility rates.
Some of the best landmarks in the El Paso area will be found in the nature outside the city — there are nine state parks, two national parks, two national monuments, one national memorial and a national forest within driving distance. Climb Guadalupe Peak in Guadalupe National Park— it’s the highest point in Texas and a great spot for your next Instagram pic. For camping, you can head to Lincoln National forest. El Paso has plenty to offer city-slickers too, inside the city you can see the Sun Bowl Stadium, El Paso Mission Trail, St. Patrick Cathedral, Magoffin Home State Historical Site, Chamizal National Memorial, Don Haskins Center, San Jacinto Center, and the YDSP Tigua Indian Cultural Center Museum.
El Paso’s nightlife has something for everyone. The Black Orchid Lounge on North Mesa street is a prohibition themed speakeasy that specializes in classic cocktails — great for when you’re feeling retro. Like Pinball? Then the Rubix Arcade bar is the place for you, this coin-op game bar has dozens of pinball machines and serves craft beer. The 301 Dance club is one of El Paso’s popular spot, and one of the few places in town that still plays crunk music. If you’re just looking for a place to relax and drink craft brews, then head over to the Hoppy Monk on North Mesa Street. Night owls should look for apartments in the Union Plaza area for rent — there’s easy access to most of El Paso’s nightlife from here.
Public transportation is available with the Sun metro, which operates a network of buses throughout the city. Cars are also a good option in El Paso, but plan around rush hour traffic. It’s not a bad idea to look for apartments for rent near work.
Texas is an affordable state, and apartments in El Paso are even more affordable than the state average — you can find studio apartments in the $400 range here.
