Searching for an apartment in Zurich, be prepared to pay a high rent. In 2022, Zurich was included on the list of the world's top 10 most expensive cities, and the rental prices reflect that. However, the high cost of living is offset by the city's many benefits, including its excellent public transportation, top-notch healthcare system, and high quality of life. Just like in any other city, the rental prices in Zurich can vary depending on the location, size, and amenities of the property. But we’ve got you covered! On Rentberry, we have hundreds of rental properties in Zurich, including apartments in ultra-modern residential buildings, lovely maisonettes, and even single-family houses! The most expensive neighborhoods here are the Old Town, Seefeld, and Enge, while more affordable options can be found in the suburbs.
Zurich is located in the north-central part of the country, surrounded by the stunning Alps, and is the largest city in Switzerland, with a population of around 400,000 people. It is one of the wealthiest cities in the country and is well known as a hub for the international finance and banking industries. However, Zurich is also an amazing place to live (for those who can afford it!) and constantly tops the list of the best cities worldwide in regard to the quality of life. Zurich is clean, safe, and overall pleasurable. The city authorities work hard to ensure its residents have everything they need for a comfortable everyday life: good transportation and quality healthcare, just to mention a few. It’s also a great place to live for expats, as most people speak at least basic English.
Like many other large European cities, Zurich has a plethora of museums, galleries, and art exhibitions. This city boasts a large collection of artworks from older times but also pays an immense attention to nurturing and promoting the contemporary art scene. Some of the famous art museums in the city include Kunsthaus Zurich, Museum Rietberg, and the Swiss National Museum. For the finest examples of modern art, head to the Museum of Digital Art, Helmhaus Zurich, or Museum Haus Konstruktiv.
This city might be a much better fit for nature lovers than for tireless party animals. In fact, it is a true gem for anyone who wants to feel connected with nature as often as possible. Zurich provides its residents with plenty of spaces for hiking, biking, and picnicking. The most well-known green spaces within city borders include Rieterpark (one of the most impressive parks in the city), Zurich Botanical Garden, Irchel Park, and Platzspitz. In summer, you can also head to Lake Zurich for swimming, boating, and fishing or simply take a walk and enjoy stunning views.
Public transportation in Zurich is considered to be one of the most efficient and comprehensive in the world. Some even believe that it’s the main reason why Zurich stands out among many other European cities. The city has a well-connected network of trams, buses, and trains that make getting around Zurich and the surrounding region easy and convenient. One of the most popular modes of transportation in Zurich is the tram system, which covers much of the city and is known for its punctuality and frequency. There are currently 13 tram lines in operation, with service running from early morning until late at night. Also, you can use the S-Bahn (a network of local and regional trains) and buses. Another benefit of this city being so well-connected is that you can search for a rental further away from the center or even consider living in the suburbs. This may help make your living expenses in Zurich more bearable.
District 1, also known as Altstadt or Old Town, may be one of the best areas to live and rent in Zurich for any newcomer. This neighborhood is located in the very heart of the city, making it convenient to explore your surroundings and move around easily. Also, living here, you can appreciate all the historic beauty of the city, its old architecture, and many cozy restaurants and bars. Rentals in Zurich’s Old Town are not too diverse in terms of housing types; this part of the city is not being actively developed. However, most apartments and rooms in District 1 come in great condition and with all the necessary amenities, even if they are located in older buildings.
District 2 is a centrally located neighborhood in the city, west of Lake Zurich. It’s made up of three parts: Wollishofen, Enge, and Leimbach, all of which are perfect for a relaxed quiet life close to the center of Zurich. District 2 drowns in greenery, is gorgeous in the summer, and is one of the favorite places to live and rent for expats: that said, you will appreciate it more if you’re not a party animal. While it is possible to find some rentals in modern residential developments, most housing in District 2 consists of older houses. While you might not have access to the newest amenities, such as an in-house gym or community lounge area, you will get the charm of the older building and hardwood floors.
Wiedikon, or District 3, consists of three parts: Alt-Wiedikon, Sihlfeld, and Friesenberg. Similar to its neighbor, District 2, it’s a quieter residential area. However, it has many things to offer to its residents, such as great vintage and boutique stores, amazing dining options, and, of course, lots of greenery. We would specifically recommend renting in Sihlfeld, as it is located pretty close to the city center, but the cost of living and rental prices in this area are more affordable than in Old Town. And, if you enjoy living in proximity to the gorgeous Swiss mountains, aim to rent in Friesenberg, which lies at the foot of the mountain Uetliberg.
Wollishofen is one of the three parts that make up District 2, and like the whole neighborhood, it’s green, calm, and peaceful. This charming area attracts dwellers of all kinds and ages: young families pushing strollers, older residents, and students who look for a quiet area to call home. The limited housing market might be one of the largest problems of renting in Wollishofen. As we mentioned, there are few new developments being built, and existing properties are not enough to meet substantial demand. Hopefully, thanks to Rentberry, you will find your dream home — even if it’s a rental apartment in Wollishofen!
