Some time ago, Poplar was an area where dock workers used to live. As you can expect, it was not popular among wealthier residents of London, and Poplar was considered to be poor, overcrowded, and scruffy. Now, this area is going through gentrification and changing, although at a bit of a slow pace. For now, the prices for renting and buying in Poplar are still among those in the more affordable range. However, new developments keep popping up all around the area, so it will most probably change soon. Some experts even say it might become the trendiest East End spot in a few years, so right now could be the high time to invest in property here.
All street food fans should head straight to the Chrisp Street Market, where they can find vendors selling all kinds of international food as well as some local staples. Residents of Poplar also have to their disposition many cozy and low-key pubs and restaurants with beautiful river views. Finally, you can check out Westfield Stratford City, one of the largest shopping malls in Europe, which has many cafes on site.
As one of the residential districts with a humble past, Poplar does not have many tourist attractions, but it can provide everything that’s needed for its residents. For example, the vibrant Chrisp Street Market, where you can buy everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to clothing and books. For years, it’s been a community hub for all locals. If you love street art, take a walk down Trinity Buoy Wharf to see some of the best works of local artists. And, all lovers of nature and green spaces should check out the East India Dock Basin Nature Reserve. Although modest in size, it is a peaceful place, perfect for bird watching.
Poplar is well-connected to the other parts of London thanks to a couple of buses, the Blackwall Tunnel, which allows for easy passage by car, and a train station. If you want to get to the City, it will take about 35-40 minutes by car and half an hour by public transport. What’s more, it’s within walking distance from Canary Wharf, one of the biggest financial centers in Europe, constantly filled with white-collar workers. As you can see, it’s no surprise many of them decide to make Poplar their home.
