Things You Need to Buy for Your First Apartment

When you move to your first rental apartment, it may seem a bit scary due to all the madness with these boxes. However, when you’ve already unpacked everything, you tend to feel the need to explore your new place and find ways to make it feel like home.

In order to do that, you need to understand what are the apartment essentials that you should bring or buy to make your new home feel like a warm and peaceful place where you can live happily.

We prepared an ultimate checklist for you, so you could simply cross out what you’ve already got and see what everyone forgets to buy after the move. Approach this practically, and you’ll be surprised how cool your new apartment can look and feel.

Kitchenware

We all need to eat something and different kind of kitchen supplies are absolutely crucial to make your life trouble-free. There is nothing more satisfying than cooking your first meal in your first rental apartment. It’s like a ritual that helps you feel completely independent.

Buy silverware

In order to use your kitchen like a pro, you’ll need the following kitchenware and supplies:

  • Dishes and silverware
  • Knives
  • Pans
  • Dish towel (to keep them dry and clean after you wash them)
  • Plastic containers for food (to keep your fridge from unnecessary smells)
  • Bottle opener
  • Bowls
  • Microwave
  • Coffee maker
  • Blender
  • Can opener
  • Shelves and additional places to store your dishes, knives, silverware, etc.
  • Table
  • Chairs
  • Napkins
  • Dish soap

Bathroom & Cleaning Supplies

How many times did you forget to buy some sort of a bathroom supply and remembered about it on the way home? These things are so important, that we recommend you get yourself properly listed necessities for your bathroom and check this list while you shop around. Here are the most important things you’ll need in your bathroom:

  • Toilet paper
  • Toothbrush
  • Tissues
  • Trash can
  • Soaps, shampoos, and lotions
  • Shower curtain (if it’s not there already)
  • Bath mat (it really feels awful to walk around there without it, let’s face it)
  • Towels (big and small)
  • Sprays and paper towels
  • Trash bags for all the rooms
  • Air freshener

It’s important to have all things that you usually use during your morning and night routine, so you would be able to perform all the necessary procedures the next morning.

Buy Furniture

Sometimes your new apartment may look weird to you, and you’ll try to understand what is that missing element that you tend to forget.

When you rent your first place, you usually don’t take any furniture from your parents’ house and just live with the provided things like a bed, a kitchen table, and a few chairs. However, you can do much better!

Furniture is a part of your home decor that can be easily used in a rental apartment. Landlords usually easily allow tenants to buy new furniture and sometimes they are even okay about taking the old furniture that you do not like and moving it out. Not all of us are so lucky to get this kind of landlord, but that’s not the point.

Buy new furniture

When you want to make a more intimate feel in your bedroom, for example, buy yourself a floor lamp or a LED string and place it somewhere near your bed. Then you’ll be able to switch off the main light and feel a warm yet not too bright colorful light.

Buy a new chair or a coffee table where you can place your favorite magazines. Buy yourself a second couch that will serve as a place where your guests usually hang out, etc.

There are lots of possibilities to make your place look and feel much better by simply buying additional furniture,

Bedroom Necessities

The bedroom is your castle where you should be able to relax and get a good night sleep. In order to do that, you need to check what kind of bed you have, do you even have one in your new rental, and what is the quality of the provided mattress.

  • Bed
  • Good mattress and sheets for it
  • Pillows
  • Night stand
  • Hangers
  • Dresser
  • Curtains
  • A desk and a chair
  • Trash can

Compile a Grocery List and Buy Food

So now you’ve got a place where you have all the cleaning and cooking supplies. You have all the furniture you may need to chill and feel at home. What’s missing? That’s right! Some food.

When you move to the new place, you have nothing in your fridge and don’t even have an egg to make scrambled eggs. And what about coffee, right?

Compile a grocery list

That’s why you need to go to the closest store and ideally to a big department store where you can get all you need.

Food is a matter of choice, everyone will compile an individual list, but we can give you some very important advice —try to remember what was your daily routine at home and what kind of products you usually consumed. Recalling previous breakfasts and dinners will help you put together a grocery shopping list.

Bring Your First Aid Kit and Basic Home Supplies

Your first apartment, like any other, should have a first aid kit. It doesn’t really matter whether you live on your own or with a friend, you will still need to have the medical supplies that will help you stop the bleeding after a knife cut or stop your headache. These are not the things you can buy later, this should be done asap. You may also need at your new place:

  • Flashlight (to inspect something at night)
  • Candles (if the electricity goes out)
  • Fans
  • Light bulbs
  • Basic tools (like a screwdriver and a hammer)

Now you have a list of things to buy when moving into a new house. Now take your phone or laptop away and go shopping. You’ve got a lot to do in order to make your new place feel like a real home!
