Prevent Your Home From Break-Ins

Whether you keep a lot of valuables in your home or not, you still want to keep it secure so that no one breaks into it.

If you don’t feel like your home is secure enough, it will be challenging to find comfort in staying there. The only way you can make your home more secure is by investing in security.

There are plenty of ways to improve your home so that it’ll be difficult for burglars to break-in.

If preventing break-ins is a priority for you, here are ten essential tips that will help you improve your home to fight against it.

1. Secure door locks

You might think that a burglar won’t have the audacity to go to your front door and try and open it to get into your home. However, you will be surprised just how many of them do that.

Even if you believe yourself to be in a safe neighborhood, it’s still better to be safe and always lock all of your doors, especially your front door.

Besides making sure that you lock your doors all the time, you should check a few other things.

First of all, you should make sure that your door frames are durable enough to withstand a certain pressure and tinkering. You should also make sure that your door hinges are secure and can’t be tampered with.

If you have a door with a mail slot, make sure that nobody can reach through the mail slot to open the doorknob from the inside. You should apply all these precautionary measures to your front door and any door in your home.

2. Install security cameras

If you already have a security system in your home, the cherry on top would be security cameras. Even if you don’t have a home security system, you can still have security cameras running around your home.

Installing security cameras allow you to observe what happens in your home.

Since security cameras record what happens, you will be able to rewind the footage and see specific moments. If you ever experienced break-ins, you can look at your recordings and see who the suspects may be.

It’s especially useful to have a security camera right at the front door to prevent people from stealing your packages.

Even without criminal activity, having visible security cameras can deter burglars. You can also put up signs around your home to drive the point home.

If you plan on installing security cameras, it’s worth getting high-quality cameras that get clear footage. That way, you can use the recordings in case something does happen.

3. Use motion sensor lights

Darkness is a useful tool for many criminals because they can hide their way to your home with the help of the cover of darkness.

Since you already know that darkness can conceal potential burglars, you might want to invest more in outdoor and indoor lighting. One useful investment for security purposes involving lighting would be motion sensor lights.

If you connect your light bulb to a motion detector so that it activates if it detects motion, you might be able to scare away potential burglars.

Having outdoor lighting in our home is that it will deter criminals. But having motion sensor lights will help you save a lot of money because it only activates when it needs to.

It’s also useful if you ever need to go out at night to either take out the trash or let your dog out for a while.

4. Secure your valuables

When you’re too comfortable in your home, you tend to leave everything out in the open. Although you have good reason to believe that you’re safe in your home, you still need to be vigilant and remember to secure your valuables.

Before any criminal would try and break into a home, they usually check the place first to figure out various things. One of which would be where the valuables are.

Thus, if you don’t secure your valuables, you might be giving away valuable information to criminals. This will also entice them to break into your home.

If you have a safe at home, keep your crucial documents there as well as expensive valuables that you would hate to lose. It would help if you also kept your tools locked away so that they can’t use your tools against you.

5. Invest in a smart door lock

As technology evolves, it makes sense that parts of our home improvement too. One investment that will prevent break-ins from happening would be smart door locks around your home.

Smart door locks offer tons of advantages to households that have them.

One benefit is that you don’t need to give away house keys to members of the household. You can assign a different code for each person to know who enters your home and exits it, and nobody would lose your key. They need to remember their code.

If you’re a forgetful person, a smart door lock can detect your presence. It automatically unlocks for you, and it will lock the door once you pass. You only need either access to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth through your smartphone.

6. Reinforce your windows

Your doors aren’t the only entrance ways for potential intruders to gain access to your home. Windows are also a common place for intruders to use to break into people’s homes.

Thus, you should also pay attention to the level of security that your windows provide you.

Since windows are glass, they are usually easy to break if they want to, so it’s crucial to get alarm contacts for windows.

Aside from the window, it would help if you also reinforced the window frames. This is to ensure that they are difficult to tamper with if someone wants to do that.

Ensure that you have high-quality windows that have locks that are difficult to open. You can use some block on the window track so that even if the lock doesn’t work, potential intruders will have a difficult time sliding open the windows.

7. Never leave a spare key outside

It would be foolish of you to underestimate the intelligence of potential criminals who want to break into your home.

Even if you are in a safe neighborhood, you should avoid leaving a spare key outside of your home. If you’re going to have people over, you should arrange that beforehand to have access to your home without leaving a spare key.

Smart locks are also an excellent way for you never to need to have a physical key in the first place. All you need for intelligent locks are smartphones, and you can dictate temporary access to people too.

8. Deter thieves with a dog

If you’re not allergic to dogs, you should try and get yourself a dog to help deter intruders from climbing over and trying to get into your home. Not only are dogs fun to have in any home, but they can also serve as protection and security.

Some people don’t even bother getting a dog to get that sense of security. Instead, what they do is they get a “Beware of a dog” sign and post it up in front of their home.

Some even go and buy dog bowls that are visible to perpetuate the illusion of a dog’s presence.

9. Conceal exterior wires

Sometimes, it’s not enough to post signs to deter a more persistent burglar with experience dealing with signs like those. If they’re aware that you have a home security system, they might look for any wires outside of your home and cut them.

If the perpetrator has cut the cables, it will make your home vulnerable. That’s because you don’t have access to electricity and external communication.

Thus, you don’t want to make it easier for burglars to find wires that can make your home vulnerable.

Electrical conduits are the best way you can conceal exterior wiring so that it’s difficult to find them and cut them.

10. Invest in an alarm system

If they aren’t deterred, at the very least, you are aware that someone is trying to break into your house. You can use that alarm to hide away until the authorities come to your home.
